Draupadi was born on 20 June 1958 in Baidposi village of Mayurganj district of Odisha.

She went to school in the village. She attended a tribal residential school from 1969 to 1973. She then enrolled in Rama Devi Women's College in Bhubaneswar to complete her education.

Murmu, 64, was the governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She was the first Governor of Jharkhand and served her full term.

Murmu received the Neelkanth Award for the best MLA of the year in 2007 from the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Despite being the governor for six years, Draupadi Murmu remained Rairangpur's puti mai (little girl).

Murmu was also the vice-president and later president of the BJP's Odisha unit's Scheduled Tribes Morcha.
